Aklan was originally known as "Minuro it Akean"
and is oldest province in the Philippines. It is believed to
have been established around 1213 by settlers who came
originally from Borneo and was then ruled by Datu Dinagandan.
In 1942, Japanese Imperial forces landed in Aklan, but in 1945, Filipino and American troops aided by Filipino guerrillas liberated Aklan.
Farming is
the basic livelihood in the interior of
Aklan whilst fishing is the livelihood along
the coasts, but despite this and the vibrant
tourism trade especially from the likes of
Boracay, there are still many poor families
who live in poverty. Some are forced seek
seasonal work in plantations in surrounding
provinces to supplement their income, in
some cases this could be the entire family
including children.
