Antique is a province of the
Philippines located in the
Western Visayas region. Its
capital is San Jose and is
located at the western
portion of Panay. Antique
was one of the three old
districts of Panay before
the Spanish arrived to
colonise the islands.
Antique was then known as
Hantik, named after the
large red ants found on the
island. The income is
mostly derived from
agriculture, palay, rice,
copra, muscovado sugar,
legumes, fruits &
vegetables, livestock, fish
and seaweeds, copra (made
from coconuts), poultry,
livestock, furniture and
handicrafts. Mineral
resources found in the
province include coal,
marble, copper, gold,
limestone, silica gemstone
and others. Traces of oil
has been discovered
recently.
As in similar regions around
this area, it is believed
that the early settlers
arrived from Bornio and or
Malay. Japanese Imperial
forces arrived on the Island
in 1942 but in 1945 was
liberated by Philippine and
Commonwealth Army forces
assisted with the local
guerrilla forces.
