The Spaniards arrived in Cagayan in 1581 where they introduced Spanish culture and civilization along with Catholism. The Spanish influence can still be seen in the massive churches and other buildings that the Spaniards built for the spiritual and social welfare of the people.
The Japanese Imperial forces entered Cagayan in 1942 but were defeated at the Battle of Cagayan Valley by the Philippine Commonwealth Forces with the aid of local guerrillas.
