Cavite was formerly known as "Tangway" the Spanish settlers built a fort on the present day site of the city of Cavite, it was around this fort that the city grew. Evidence of prehistoric settlements have been unearthed around the costal regions of Cavite where according to legend the first settlers came from Borneo
In 1872, Filipinos launched its revolt against Spain starting a mutiny within Spanish . The Philippine revolution against the Spaniards started in 1896 when Filipinos from Cavite made lightning raids on Spanish headquarters, their leader was Emilio Aguinaldo, they succeeded in liberating the province of Cavite. The Republic of the Philippines proclamation was made on the 12th of June 1898.
The Japanese Imperial army entered Cavite in 1942 but were defeated by Filipino Commonwealth forces with the help of local guerrillas in 1945.
